Get your boxes as soon as you can. You want to collect them from stores before everyone else starts asking.

Moving out of your Athens, Georgia apartment can be a stressful experience. There are boxes to be gathered, movers to schedule, trucks to rent, and then the conundrum of where to put all of the stuff you’ve accumulated over time!

We have put together some ways to de-stress your move and organize your chaos.

1. Make a list!
As with most stressful processes, being organized keeps things calm and collected. Make a list of all the things you need to do to get ready for your move. It may look something like this:

a. Check with office for move out date, and schedule a move out inspection
b. Schedule movers based on move out inspection appointment or coordinate a truck or friends to help with heavy lifting.
c. Check with the office for a copy of your move in inspection so you know what things need to be cleaned/repaired.
d. Collect boxes from liquor stores, convenience stores, or grocery stores. Make sure your boxes aren’t too big so that they’ll be too heavy to move.
e. Check with your roommates to understand their move out schedule
f. Coordinate with your roommates and make a chore list. Dole out the cleaning duties for the living room, kitchen, bathrooms, and make sure everyone knows how their bedroom is expected to be cleaned
g. Ensure roommates will be present for the move out inspection, and if they cannot be there, make sure you get their house key, pool key, mailbox key, and parking permit.

2. Take Action

Once you have your list in place, accomplish your line items! Coordinating movers and move out inspections can be tricky as this is the busiest time of year for the moving companies. Get on this early!

3. Purge

Start cleaning out your apartment little by little. As you use your everyday things, start thinking about the stuff packed in the back of the closet or pantry that you never use. Begin throwing away junk and donating unwanted things now. It will make packing a lot easier later.

4. Prepare Financially

Sometimes moving can be expensive. Make sure you calculate what kind of expenses you are going to face so that you’re prepared for this burden.

5. Have fun!

Moving can be fun. Leaving roommates and an old place can be sad, but that usually means you’re headed to something new. Enjoy the fact that you’re growing and headed for exciting changes.
