School's back in - time to volunteer!

With UGA fall semester classes set to begin in less than a week, Athens is buzzing with college students returning to town. Ride down Baxter Street and you will find truckloads of futons just ready for their new dorm rooms, sales and specials at all of the college bookstores and sorority girls and fraternity boys in rush mode. School is definitely back in session!

With the first few weeks filled with traffic, hot weather, book-buying and moving into your new UGA dorm room or Athens apartment, here are some suggestions about how to start out the semester on the right foot by giving back to the Athens community you have missed all summer!

Athens is known for its philanthropic residents whether it be the full-time adult residents or UGA students. On the UGA side, a single fundraiser, Dance Marathon benefiting the Children’s Miracle Network, raised more than $300,000 last semester! An impressive feat with 500+ student volunteers organizing and participating in the event.

Literally thousands of volunteer opportunities exist in our community – inside and outside of the university. A link on the Web site for UGA’s Center for Leadership and Service lists non-profits in the area looking for volunteers. Click here to find out an opportunity that best suites you! Organizations are listed alphabetically but you can also review them by category to find a good fit for you. Categories include:

  • Children

  • Cultural Arts

  • Disabilities

  • Donations and Animals

  • Education

  • Elder Care

  • Environmental

  • General Resources

  • Health Care

  • Social Services

Another opportunity to learn about our community’s volunteer needs and find out how you can get involved is at the 2009 Athens Volunteer Expo. The Expo will be held at The Classic Center in downtown Athens on September 10, 2009 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The goal of the Expo is to increase the amount of volunteers and service in the Athens area by inviting local non-profits to set up a booth and having interested parties learn about the various organizations and needs available.

Hands on Northeast Georgia is another wonderful resource to help connect you to volunteer opportunities in and around Athens. On the site, you can check out available volunteer opportunities, become a member and receive regular updates, and more.

So as the hustle and bustle of the new school year gets in full swing, remember volunteering is a great way to give back to the community you call home – even if it’s only for nine months out of the year!
