Inexpensive Ways to Decorate Your College Apartment

Downtown Athens Georgia Holiday Parade & Tree Lighting
The holidays are right around the corner and before the stress of finals and the excitement of the semester break, take some time to enjoy the season and deck the halls in your apartment!
Decorating your college apartment can be fun and inexpensive. Use things you may already have around the house and get creative. Here are a few ideas that may help:
- Personalize and hang stockings for you and your roommates – this can be a fun project and very inexpensive. Purchase plain stockings and paint, glitter, felt, etc. and create your own designs for your stockings. You could even include some school spirit and make Georgia-themed stockings.
- Make and hang paper snowflakes. Flash back to your elementary school days and start cutting out your own snowflakes. Hang them around your apartment and create a wintery wonderland.
- Use natural ingredients to create holiday decor. Athens Georgia is filled with gorgeous trees such as magnolias, hollys, pines and more that you can use to create gorgeous centerpieces and mantle dressings. Ask a neighbor if they don’t mind if you make some cuttings to create your decor.
- Use fruits and berries to make interesting candles and centerpieces. Take a tall glass and fill it with water and apples, lemons, limes or cranberries and top it with a floating candle.
- Use fishing line and inexpensive ornaments and hang them from the ceiling or stairway. Hang at different lengths to create interest.
- Buy some inexpensive ribbon and tie bows that can be tied around dining room/kitchen chairs, on doors, banisters, etc.
- Use holiday wrapping paper and completely cover a door (maybe to your pantry, closet, bedroom, front door, etc.) then use ribbon to create a bow – instantly, you’ve transformed a plain door into a giant present!
- Use holiday cards that you receive as decorations – hang them around the apartment for instant holiday cheer!
- Play Christmas music on your ipod or on Pandora!
If you are having trouble getting into the holiday spirit, plan to attend the downtown Athens Christmas parade! With more than 60 floats, bands, and other groups, the parade will march through the downtown streets (lit up in the twinkling lights!) and culminate with the lighting of the Christmas tree in front of City Hall. The parade is hosted by none other than Santa and Mrs. Claus. Come early for the Downtown Open House, with great deals and extended hours by great downtown retailers! The theme for the 2009 parade is “A Gift from the Heart.”
