Dawgs for Haiti

January 12, 2010 marks the date of one of the most destructive natural disasters in history – a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that rattled the small island nation of Haiti to its core. With more than 100,000 deaths already confirmed and many more expected, and more than 3 million people in need of emergency aid, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But, right here in our own collegiate community, wheels are in motion to help.

A volunteer UGA campus organization called Dawgs for Haiti sprung into quick action and is working campus to raise funds and help provide relief to our neighbors to the south. With a goal of raising $50,000 to help 50,000 people, Dawgs for Haiti proceeds will be divided evenly between the relief efforts of the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders.

Dawgs for Haiti has been branded with a royal blue ribbon, symbolic of the same color in the Haitian flag. A t-shirt fundraising and awareness campaign is underway and in fact, Dawgs for Haiti organizers encourage everyone on campus to wear them on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 as a show of support.

To date, More than 110 student organizations have pledged their support to the cause. Hundreds of individual volunteers have offered their time. President Adams donated $5,000 from his discretionary fund to cover operational costs and our first T-shirt orders. Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. Rodney Bennett, offered $2,000 to cover additional expenses. Within four days of launching its Web site, the group had already raised $10,000 and is expected to exceed it’s goal.

According to the Dawgs for Haiti Web site, “the bulldog nation has 34,000 students, 250,000 alumni, and countless more members around the world. Now is the time for us to come together and demonstrate that Southern hospitality to our friends in Haiti by giving them our support.” Show your support by donating online and wearing your t-shirt on Tuesday.
