Tips for Apartment Safety

These tips for Apartment safety may seem like common sense, but it’s easy to gain a false sense of security and get careless. Here are five apartment safety tips to consider.

Apartment Safety Tip #1: Get renters insurance

Renters insurance is a form of insurance that covers a policy holder’s belongings against perils such as fire, theft, windstorm, hail, explosion, vandalism, riots, and others. Possessions can be covered for their replacement cost or the actual cash value that includes depreciation.

Renters insurance isn’t really expensive considering how much it would cost if something were to happen to the unit or your belongings.

Check with your parents’ current home owners insurance. Renters insurance may already be part of the policy.

Apartment Safety Tip #2: Leave the Light On

Leaving a light on confuses potential intruders as to whether or not you are home. If you’re worried that leaving a light on will run up your electric bill, use a compact fluorescent bulb. You might also put on some music at a low volume.

Apartment Safety Tip #3: Lock the door

This is the most important safety tip. Remember, most burglars are looking for the easiest opportunity. Don’t give an intruder the opportunity to take advantage of you just because you were being careless. Remember, it’s selfish not to lock the door behind you when a roommate is still inside. You’d hate for a roommate to be in danger just because you were too lazy to get your key out and lock the door behind you. Also, don’t leave a hidden key in a plant, under the mat, in a fake rock, or anywhere near your door.

Apartment Safety Tip #4: Be cautious when answering the door

Don’t just open your apartment door to anyone, especially when you’re not expecting them. Use your peephole, and if you don’t recognize the individual don’t open the door.

Apartment Safety Tip #5: Get to know your neighbors

When your neighbors also become your friends you develop multiple “lifelines” in the event of an emergency. Whether it’s just needing a cup of sugar or something more dramatic like needing someone to call 911 for you while you’re in danger— knowing your neighbors often comes in handy. Other than the safety factor, it’s more fun living in a place where your neighbors are also your friends.
