So you’re either headed to college or moving off campus for the first time, and you don’t know what to pack or how to move in the most effective way. Here is a list of 10 things to remember to help your move to an Athens, GA apartment or any apartment for that matter.
1. Create a moving checklist.
Make a checklist outlining everything that needs to be done in each phase of your move (before, after, and during). The things on your checklist maybe the rest of this list!
2. Say goodbye to the clutter.
Avoid moving stuff you don’t need and haven’t used or touched in a year. It’s expensive, time-consuming, and physically unnecessary to move things you won’t be using. If you don’t want to move it now, you surely don’t want to move it as you move the next time. C’mon are you really going to use that extra mini fridge?
3. Coordinate with roommates.
Have a conversation with your roommates before the move deciding who is bringing what. Share decorating ideas and make sure you don’t duplicate your efforts.
4. Don’t stuff your clothes in bags or containers.
Invest in a clothing rod made for traveling. It’ll fit across your backseat, and you can keep your hanging clothes clean and wrinkle free. Stuffing these items in a duffel bag may seem easy, but you’ll create work for yourself after the wrinkles set in.
5. Have a tool kit on hand.
You’d be surprised how often you’ll need a drill, screw drivers, a hammer, tape measurer, etc. during and after the moving process. Invest in a tool kit today! They even make cute pink ones for the girls out there.
6. Pack room by room.
Keep the contents of each room in separate boxes. This will save you a lot of time and work when you’re unpacking.
7. Packing materials.
Plan ahead and start collecting free, foldable boxes from local stores and shops. Don’t spend extra money on packing supplies when you can start storing free boxes folded under your bed.
8. Keep it light.
Pack your things in several medium sized boxes rather than just a few large boxes. Cartons can be handled easier if they aren’t more than 50 lbs. It’ll be easier to move the lighter boxes even if there are more of them.
9. Get your bed ready.
As soon as you have your bedroom furniture in your room, go ahead and set up the sheets and get it ready to sleep in. You’ll be thankful this part of your life is ready when you’re tired and done unpacking.
10. Make a survival kit.
Have your bed made, and you’re done packing for the night? You can’t stop though because your pajamas, toothbrush, and soap are all packed away in several different places. Make a survival kit, similar to an overnight bag. That way you’ll know exactly where all your essentials are.
Please add a comment if you have any great moving tips to share! These are just a few I’ve found to be helpful, but I know there are plenty more.
